As I bring out my CV, I see a lot of people wanting to escort the carrier...but despite their good intention, they do a really sad job of it..
I figured I might as well post at least what I think would be a good way of helping your carrier and win the battle..rather than wasting your ship's resources and not helping the team.
First, its the ship, obviously the bigger the better, but it's also important in knowing what to equip the CV escorts. escorting a CV is different in escorting a CL vs CVs... CV's have fighters that can protect themselves from enemy bombers, so AA is not really critical in the CV escort. However, CV's have no guns, and the bomber's dont really do a good job vs small DDs (like Q class).
Hence, the escorts should have good guns, and torpedoes are good deterrents too.
As for formation goes.. what I see usually is
DDD
DCD D=DD, C=CV
DDD
this is escort the CV, not tag the CV..give the CV some breathing room..
a better way would be to establish a wider net,

this way they won't spot the CV by seeing the concentration of DDs. Also, by having a wider net, you also give the CV more time to respond to incoming threats. and if you see a threat coming in, dont go chase him, draw him in, while the rest of the DD's can steam fast and try to concentrate fire on it.

as for DD's that just escort and runs at the first sign of trouble..well..we all know what to say bout that, but for those that genuinely want to help the CV and the team, a more organized way to escort will go a long way to help winning the batle.
