Having read naval strategies about the use of different ships, I was cuious as to which ones could be applied to NavyField. After talking with a few veteran players, I found out that the frigates torps are not powerful enough to do major damage to a battleship. However, they could cripple CLs or CAs, and they could be enough to turn the tide between two BBs fighting it out. That is theory as my noob crew is not high enough yet to test it.
My next idea went like this, please follow closely;
I took a Lvl 4 crew and a neutral FF02-Mk1 with single torpedo tubes and 3"L neutral guns (one crew member was lvl 3 and therefore not high enough to use the larger guns.)
What I did, was at the beginning of battle steamed as fast towards the bottom of the map in an attempt to outflank the opponent. My superior speed allowed me to outrun the CLs and CAs that tried to stop me with minimal damage. When I got to the back of the map, I had a clear shot at the carriers. My torps (annoyingly) refused to fire correctly (front fire, I ended up running them over :-P) so I just sat behind and peppered him with APC rounds, which did little more than harrasment damage. Here is the big thing though, his planes came in to land, and since they need to move low and slow enough to land, they were all shot down by my frigate's auto guns. The guy got pissed and said I had earned myself an instant ban from all of his rooms in the future.
Now, look at this from a strategic POV, I saved my BBs from being bombed to death, and racked up a ton of XP in the process. When he called back the CLs and CAs to kill me (all the DDs were in front fighting with other DDs), I stayed so close to him that all they did was hit him. It wasn't until I accidentally sailed in the wrong direction that I was finally killed.
My analysis:
The FF can play a key role on a fleet if used properly.
