When I realized that my 5" cannons did little damage to cruisers and higher, I thought for a while. So I rearmed my ship (the Pugh) as follows:

5 X single barrel 7" Mark 2D cannons w/250 rounds heavy HE and 100 rounds AP
2" of belt armor
1 X twin-barrel 3" Mark 70 AA gun w/50 shells

The most satisfying part is landing 2200 in damage when the ship you're firing at is stupid enough to come in to attempt a rake. I don't consider the lack of torpedoes to be a problem since the DDX torpedo options suck anyway. The refire rate is a bit of a downer (5.6 seconds) but the damage more than makes up for it. It does give you a bit of a range advantage over most other destroyers, and the lightness of the 7" guns (16 tons) leaves plenty of room on the DDX for armor. The 2" of belt armor I have is all I could afford, not all the ship could carry.

Anyway, just a thought. Any suggestions/comments?

With my dual 6" guns I was easily landing 3k-3.5k in damage per broadised. Plus I could put on 4" belt.

Oops forgot to mention I'm level 29 - I don't have access to 6" duals yet or of course I'd use them.

My little DDX is configured as follows:

5x 6"/.53 with 2xHeavy HE
1x 4 tube torp launcher
DDII Heavy Engine
DD FCS II Auto (I suck at manual... tried it on my CL and did better)
1.0" Belt
5 bulge
I have fat crews. I hate losing experts.

I deal an average of 18,000-22,000 damage per round unless I get torpwalled... :bash:

I can do about 3k-5k per broadside, or for ranged shots I get around 800-1200 (my gunners are lvl 34 Accuracy gunners right now)

Lose the torp tube. In the time it would take to line up the torps, fire them, and wait for them to hit you could easily fo more than twice the ammount of damage any torp shot is likely to do, unless you get really lucky. A single tube just doesn't really cut it.

It does help when your team is torpwalling, and if you use it right, you can take out CLs and CAs in one fast narrow salvo. I <3 my torps, and they get me XP.

But they don't get you exp for your gunners, and your gunners are the most important crew to get exp for. It is always a good idea to have your gunners a few levels above your bo. Ditch the torps, slap on an extra inch or two of belt.

5"/54 N duals are the secret weapon of the DDX. When you start HAing a unsuspecting CL, or CA if you can sneak up on one, they are usually to supprised to target you right off the bat and you can rack up some HUGE XP HAing. If the Ns leave you a bit short on space or ammo the Ds are not too bad either. BTW you really should learn Manual FCS. Yes it IS hard, but well worth it in the end. Oh yeah it is also the only way to HA...
